Soldering iron of 25 watt power
Rosin solder
De-soldering Pump
Toothbrush, knife
99% isopropyl alcohol

Step 1: Dismantle your laptop

The very first step is to take apart your laptop so that you can work on the motherboard. Remember to keep a tab of which screw goes where when dismantling your laptop so that you can fix it back without any trouble. Now, remove the motherboard completely from its mounting case.

Step 2: De-solder joints

Use the soldering iron to de-solder joints. Pour out some solder on the joint and wait for it to heat and flow smoothly. The solder should be able to melt so that it can flow into the joint. Now wait for the solder to cool down and cast. Repeat the same process with the other joints too.

Step 3: Remove power socket from mother board

Carefully remove the power socket from the motherboard. Do not apply force. Ensure that the solder has melted when trying to remove the power socket.

Step 4: Clean and swipe the internal components using a brush.

After removing the power socket, clean the oxidized parts using a knife. Apply a new coat of solder on them. Clean the power socket terminals by swiping it with alcohol using a brush.

Step 5: Replace the power socket

If the loose connection of the power jack was preventing it from working properly, you can solder the same power socket back into its place. Else, you will need to replace it with a new power jack and solder it back in the same way. Solder all pins of the laptop DC power socket. Now, you just need to fix the motherboard back into the laptop.

Macbook Repairs are fairly infrequent, and being the past owner of the first Macbook air series and now a Macbook pro, I feel well placed to comment on the process of Mac repairs. All macs have a far more robust operating system giving the user a far more reliable experience. We know most Microsoft operating platforms, XP, Vista and now Windows & do still suffer from “holes” found by hackers, but the problem is less prevalent with mac. I recall my first mac book air was used most days for 2 years or more without any anti virus system in place, this is testimony to the robust quality of the leopard snow leopard and the new lion operating system. The only fault I did have with my macbook air was the rear screen hinges broke and this is a common fault with them. The overall cost of repair was surprisingly cheap though, we normally quote both hinges replaced for less than £120.00. macbook air screen replacements are quite common in our workshop. We see quite a few screens replacement jobs for macbook air series because they are just so wafer thin they do not get any protection should anyone accidentally sit or stand on their mac. TIP Number one – do not get into a habit of leaving your macbook air on the floor or on sofa!
