I wanted to take this quick opportunity to wish you a discrete Very Merry Festive season and to sincerely Thank You for your business this year. My team and I truly value the custom you bring.
I want to give you a booklet I recently wrote and published for Education establishments. This booklet will undoubtably help you, or a member of your family.
May I also share with you a true story….
Christmas day I was watching my son open his ‘big present’ a new Macbook. ….The joy and happiness beaming across his face as he began to set up his new Macbook Air was plain to see. He just turned 18 years old too!
This moment got me thinking. I remembered my first really bad computer experience. I had been working long hours on a really important document for work. Sound familiar?!
My work involved some internet research, normal Google searching. I clicked on a few pages, browsing and clicking around. Then one of those annoying pop ups just appeared! That pop up was so annoying, every few minutes something would pop up even when I closed it.
Has this ever happened to you?
All I had done was browse around on the internet, reading some forums.
This was the start of worse to come. I noticed my laptop was running slower and slower. Even the fan was whirring faster
Eventually I remember giving up, walking away from my laptop leaving it on but eventually knowing it would slip in to hibernation.
Some time later that day I remember walking into my ‘home office’ and to my horror, I saw what I could only describe as watching the cursor move around on my screen, opening folders (my folders, my data!)
What was happening before my very eyes, was a hacker was actually attempting to decipher some encrypted data and steal it from MY COMPUTER!
I immediately did the only logical thing I could think of – I disconnected the internet from my computer, literally I pulled the cable out of the wall!
But the damage was done.
All my data had been corrupted and some stolen by the hacker.
Then the shear panic set in. The questions rushed in to my head.
Had I remembered to back up my data?
When did I last back up?
Could I manage with what backups I had?
Sadly, I paid a heavy price. I lost almost everything I had written. Many documents and project work were lost forever. The only items I managed to retrieve was emailed documents. The rest was lost for good.
So how did all this happen?
‘Trojan Horse’ Viruses
Well those pop ups I mentioned were infected with what is known as a Trojan horse virus. It masquerades to be something it is not. What it was became apparent.
It was a small programme designed to embed itself into a computer. Once it installed itself, a hacker could access my laptop as easily as a stranger walking through your ‘open front door’ of your house.
Once the hacker is inside your router network, they can access pretty much anything. Computers become open doors.
So what is the answer?
Well, you can build as much security as you want, but ultimately human error normally breaches the firewall. A click on a seemingly harmless email or web page. That’s all it takes.
Then its just a matter of time. The damage and loss can be catastrophic.
There are two things which should be considered.
Utilise a 100% secure Online backup system which will offer you unlimited storage space
The ability to restore any file or folder containing pictures, movies, music or files to any device you choose.
Use a UK based system which offers EU level data protection and privacy standards. *USA does not respect the same highest standards.
Use a product which is ‘Set and Forget’. This means you do not have to remember to carry out a backup. It does it all for you every hour, every day, every week and every month.
Even when those files are stolen or deleted, you can still retrieve them from your cloud backup system, what’s more you can download them to any device including an iPhone or iPad.
Using a Uk based Online back up system brimming with state of the art security and protection is a fundamental solution to the problem I faced.
It is impossible to always beat the hacker. But what you can do, is take an insurance policy. Protect your valuable data, business or personal by backing it up and uploading to highly secure storage centres. More on this in a moment.
The second thing is simply be aware. The internet is fantastic, but lurking around is the darker side. You could be just one click leading away from disaster. Seemingly harmless content typically videos and music downloaded online (for ‘free’) are the most perilous options. Free music and films are deliberately infected with Trojan Horse Viruses.
I recently wrote for Education establishments a booklet on how to improve and secure your IT. I had this booklet published too.
I am giving you a FREE copy, which you can safely download here.
Within this book you will discover many useful tips on how to improve your IT at home, work or school. You will even learn about the latest cyber attacking techniques. The booklet is broken down in to ten easy chapters.
Remember for- warned is for-armed
So here it is again, simply click on this scanned safe link which will provide you with a PDF version of the booklet which you can save. I would ask you not to distribute, copy or sell this book online. It is a gift and a small thank you – just for you.
The second thing I want to mention is our own solution to a secure cloud online backup system.
As a well respected IT company, we are avid passionate users and fans of a system which really delivers.
I shared with you earlier the key benefits one should consider when researching a top Online Backup system to protect you and your family.
AT Cambridge Laptop Repair, our product of choice is this system.
http://www.backupagility.com/ We are so impressed by this amazing tool we recommend it to all our preferred customers and friends.
The benefits are simple to understand too.
- It’s a Uk based company. – This is very important.
- It offers unlimited storage space for each account type.
- You can retrieve stolen or deleted files.
- You can preview or download any uploaded stored file on any device, including an iPhone or iPad.
- It’s a fixed low price every month. ( I love this!)
- There is excellent support.
- The best point is this. Its Set and Forget. One the installation has worked and uploaded, the schedule is automatic. You can of course adjust it to suit.
So feel free to take a look at a more ‘belt and braces’ approach to your Internet and computer security. The link can be found here.
Once downloaded for PC or Mac, simply leave it to do what it does so well.
