The subject of laptop motherboard repairs is always going to be a grey area because the suspected fault symptoms are not always so obvious, especially to the uninitiated. The easy sure fire way to get a motherboard failure and be certainly sure you have ‘cooked it’ is of course a liquid spill normally via the keyboard! Sadly this type of repair although undertaken by us does have the least successful rate of repair. Its always worth a try though, we have seen laptops with sweet smelling WKD blue all over them and still we have got them going again!
Of course a question we are always asked is: ‘Can we get the pics and music back?’ the answer is 99% of the time YES. We use some pretty clever imaging tactics to backup and restore data to DVD’s, new hard drives or to new laptops.
The other major failure symptom is shock damage caused by dropping the laptop or something fall on it. This also causes component failure, but we do have a very good rate of success here. The typical symptom would be no power at all, or lines across the screen display. Often the laptop will try to boot but simply recycle itself.
The final most popular cause of laptop motherboard failure is overheating. This can be a make and model fault (no names mentioned but it begins with H!) We see many laptops which simply have display failures (Graphics Processor units) not working. A simple test which sometimes proves the failure is to hook the laptop up to an external monitor to see if there is any output there. If not, its likely the GPU has failed.
All three symptoms follow a similar repair process although with liquid spills we do a specialised motherboard deep clean process too. The main tools we use are specialised BGA rework stations and hot air guns. The skills required for this work are electronic component level skilled engineers.
It is worth noting all said and done, this repair type has to be financially viable in order to survive in the tough computer break/fix world. We believe it still is worthy to try this route rather than replace for new. the typical Laptop Motherboard Repair is still under £130.00 in some circumstances. This clearly makes good business sense to try if laptop is under four years old.
You will find a couple of interesting videos which demonstrate the process very nicely and yet show you the benefits of ‘repair’ versus replace.
